DESIGN: Electrotor-SloMo ~ Control Electric - Power Circuit

• "A mean voltage of 150 V DC on the controller input terminals will give a maximum speed of approximately 125 rad/s (1190 rpm) for the Halbach motor."

• "In addition to the familiar sine wave of single phase, 3 phase has a second phase starting 120 degrees after the first, and a third phase at 240 degrees.
  
  The big advantage to 3 phase is that motors can be smaller for the same horse power. Just as a single phase AC motor is smaller than a similar DC motor, so a 3 phase motor is smaller than a single phase. Airplanes use electric motors with even more phases where weight is even more important then size."

• This (perhaps crazy) idea is to have a single-phase electric motor located in each of the two aero-rotor hubs. These two motors would be rotationally connected mechanically. They would also be 90º electrically out of phase with each other. They would be permanent magnet DC motors and would be controlled together, perhaps by a Hall effect sensor in one of the motors, or perhaps sensorless.
• The thinking is that the combined 2-phases will proved direction of rotation plus it may provide a better power to weight ratio than other motors because all coils will be delivering power 100% of the time.
• Note that a 3-phase motor with delta wiring has all coils power and the power probably varies proportionally with the electrical azimuth of the rotor.

• Question: If you want to fly a plane with 2 electric motors ... do you then also need 2 speed controls or can you hook up one esc to both the motors ? (and anything you should keep in mind when doing this ? like maybe make one motor turn clockwise and the other one counter clockwise or something ?)
• Answer: 2 motors (brushless) will require 2 speed controllers. There are a few that have been (claim) successful in using one speed controller for two motors, but there are ramifications and side effects that can rear up. Both props can spin in the same direction and there isnt anything special to keep in mind. The two speed controllers controller leads will be hooked up to a Y harness and then plugged into the RX. One battery can be used, but the voltage will need to be higher to run both and the amp rating (on the battery) should be high enough to handle the current.
