Electric drive trains will probably be the future propulsion for vehicles. This means that there will be much research, development and improvements in this field. Electric helicopters can only benefit from all this effort.

Mounted as the counterweight.
An electric motor can deliver 1 to 2 HP per pound of weight.
The motor must have a stronger bearing at one end to handle the axial load cause by the centrifugal force from rotating about the mast. In addition, the bearings must be able to handle the radial loads caused by the gyroscopic effect.
The motor should probably have a small diameter to minimize its profile drag.

THE NEW HONDA INSIGHT The motor assist mechanism is composed of an ultra-thin DC brushless motor, a nickel metal-hydride battery and a PCU (Power Control Unit).

The ease of cooling the brushless motor allows it to produce a much higher power in relationship to size.
The electronics necessary to drive a brushless motor are also more complex then for a brush motor.

Ideas:

Two motors: Consider having two smaller (diameter) motors side by side driving a common ring gear. This will reduce the drag and provide safety, if the weight is not significantly increased. A small increase in weight may be acceptable because it will shorten the moment arm and reduce the rotational airspeed that the motor and powertrain are subjected to.

February 2, 2006 However this will require a ring gear that has a larger diameter than a single motor, which is being replaced. Another disadvantage is that the gyroscopic precession, which reduces coning, will be less.

In the spring of 2005 Toyota will introduce the Highlander SUV as a hybrid. Its 3.3 litre V6 engine will be powered by a new version of Toyota’s Synergy Drive power train. It will produce a total peak power of about 270 horsepower (gas engine and electric motor combined) which will give a 27.6 mpg fuel economy. Its new high speed electric motor will operate at twice the speed and deliver more than twice the power as the motor used in the four-cylinder Prius. A majority of the options currently found in the conventional Highlander will also be available in the 2006 Highlander Hybrid.
