Re: DeltaCad produced .DXF files for outside use.

Copied from e-mail to DK.

I have downloaded a .DWG viewer program and a .DWG - .DXF converter program from http://www.opendwg.org/

A .DWG file was on my other computer, so it was used as a test.

The viewer program opened the .DWG file.
The converter program converted the .DWG file to .DXF format.
The DeltaCad program opened the .DXF file and then saved in in .DC format.
The .DC file was then reopened by DeltaCad and saved as a second .DXF file.
The viewer program was able to open the second .DXF file. In fact, the .DWG viewer
program is able to open the .DWG file and both .DXF files.

The first .DXF file was then opened in ASCII format with a text editor. It contains the coding for 3D.
The second .DXF file (that was passed through DeltaCad) was then opened in ASCII format with a text editor. It contains the coding for 2D only.

RE: LOADING DeltaCad .DC FILES INTO AutoCAD

Since the .DWG viewer program can open DeltaCad produced 2D .DXF files, it should be possible for AutoCAD to accept earlier version 2D files, as well.

I have just ordered the latest version of DeltaCad. It says that it has a couple of improvements related to saving in .DXF format, but this may be of little value.

One last thing, before you get too bored :) You may want to down load the .DWG viewer from the above web site. I opened the 0820.DXF file, that I sent you, in it and it is very clear.

One very last thing, before you get really bored :) You may want to download the .DWG - .DXF converter program from the above web site as well. Convert the 0820.DXF file, that I sent you, to a .DWG file and then load that into AutoCAD.

I really think that AutoCAD should accept 0820.DXF. Perhaps AutoCAD has a convert program that must modify the file first.

I telephoned a gentleman at AutoDesk in Vancouver to resolve this problem. He said that the first releases of AutoCAD Ver. 14 were unable to read some .DXF files that were produced by outside programs. They then modified Ver. 14 and it can now handle these outside .DXF files. The modification is available on their web site.

I tried to open both of the files (ergoman) you sent me; I tried Acad 2000 and it returned an error on line 54 of the DXF file(?).

It's unfortunate that AutoCAD will not accept the DeltaCad .DXF file. Both of the two, unrelated, freeware programs accepted it. [D Convert] was successful in converting it into a .DWG file. [DWG Viewer] was able to read and display *both* the original .DXF file and the .DWG file. Perhaps AutoCAD does not want to encourage people to convert to cheaper and easier-to-use products :)

Attached is the same drawing 0820, but in .DWG format. It will be interesting, for both of us, to see if AutoCAD can open it?

GOOD! AutoCAD was able to open the 0820.DWG file. The downside is that I have to;

    1. Open DeltaCad
    2. Open the .DC file
    3. Save the file as .DXF
    4. Close DeltaCAD
    5. RUN: Dconvert .DXF -> .DWG

It would be nice if step 5. could be eliminated.
