An axial flux electric motor with one central stator and contra-rotating armatures on each side.

4-phase controller or four 1-phase controllers for redundancy.

Will work with 48-coil stator but not with 36-coil stator.

Commutation:

"Commutation creates a rotation field. Proper operation of a BLDC motor requires the angle between stator and rotor flux to remain close to 90°. Eight-step control yields a total of eight possible stator flux vectors. The stator flux vector must be changed at a certain rotor position. .......... There is no possibility with a eight-step control technique of keeping a precise 90° angle between the rotor flux and the stator flux. Voltage changes take place at the vector.

4-phase Voltage Strokes Applied to the 4-phase BLDC Motor:

The high drive period and the low drive period of each output is separated by a floating drive phase period. This dead time means that the high and the low drivers for the same phase cannot be active at the same time. This is applicable to 3-phase and from the above it is obviously applicable to greater phase counts.
