DESIGN: AeroVantage ~ PropRotor - Hub - 1x2.- Layout w/ Swashplate, w/o Gears

Notes:

This is for the 1x2 PropRotor. Therefore it must provide both collective and cyclic pitch control.

Options for Consideration:

Use 6 instead of 3 linear actuators for redundancy. Two would operate at each end of a teetering bar to move a pitch rod. The failure of 1 would limit the total movement to 50% (25% on each side of the flailed actuators extension). Would like; same Force, and same stroke, but 50% of the speed.

Description of Operation:

Put hydraulic valves at Proprotor and only 2 hydraulic lines to 3 pitch and 1 wrist servos? Then take electric wiring to individual hydraulic valves

Advantages Over;

Simpler, lighter

Disadvantage:

The slow motor does not deliver as much power. Re-evaluate this statement.

The slow motor has a lower efficiency, and the three motors have the same weight.

Having the linear actuator move the swashplate will result in their moving approximately 1/100 the number of times that they will move on the Independent Blade Control. This rough conclusion is based on a rotor speed of 1,500 rpm and the pilot moving the cyclic stick once per four seconds.

There is no need for up to 30 slip-rings between the rotor hub and the PropRotor housing. One multi-wire cable will come out the side of the PropRotor housing.

The currently electric linear actuator used on the drawing is the ZABER ~ NA14B60. The slightly larger ZABER ~ NA23C60 will also fit in and it may be safer (more reliable) to use the larger one.

Linear actuators have a built in magnetic home sensor. This may not be good enough since this can only be set when the PropRotor in its home position, which will probably be at the end stop at minimum pitch. For example, on the ground before takeoff. To control actuator position, simply transmit the unit number of the T-CD controller you want to move, a simple move command and the position desired. After the move, the controller will report its position. Does this take into account any missed steps?

Have a large spring on the center of the non-turning portion of the swashplate to oppose the hydraulic pressure from the single port. The spring will also move the swashplate to the 'home' position, after the pressure has also been removed from the other 2 cylinders.

It is extremely unlikely that a cylinder could lock-up. The worst might be the loss of pressure in one cylinder (due to ??) and this will be caught by the sensor and computer. A small leak in the line should only result in spilt oil.

Alternative Position for Actuator:

Consider pivoting the mount of the actuators on an axis normal to the radials of the PropRotor. This way they might be used in lieu of a scissors to stop the rotation of non-rotating portion of the swashplate.

General Concerns:

Getting cooling air past the hub and to the motor. Consider making the cone on the hub as the radiator and running the fluid up the centerline (planet holder). The speed difference between the rotor and the frame might drive a coolant pump in this hub and the rotor
