DESIGN: AeroVantage - Transition Mechanism - Proposed Methods - 2x4 - Pivoting Arms #6

Overview:

This proposal has a movement similar to Pivoting Arm #5 ~ 672.html, I.e. having the rear arms swing above the wings. It appears to be the optimum arraignment (so far). See to Pros & Cons below.

Pros & Cons:

Pros:

During hover both PropRotors are have a high elevation, which means a greater distance from the ground.

The fore and the aft PropRotors have a similar elevation.

All four PropRotor mechanisms are driven from one common x-shaft and actuator.

The thrust moments from the fore and aft proprotors neutralize each other at all transitional positions ~ it looks like. This means that the transitioning powering components can be weaker.

It will give greater strength to the mechanism during hover since there will be a greater gap between the Arm-Mid-Fwd and the Arm-Major.

The mechanism is probably the simplest.

The large longitudinal stagger between the PropRotors in hover is to give improved stability during hover. It can be reduced if this lengtht is not necessary.

The lateral width of the arms may be less than the other ideas (parasitic drag).

This mechanism is similar to 1642 except that on this one the moments resulting from both proprotor thrusts cancel out.

The mechanism is mounted on the wing's spar that runs from the port transition mechanism to the starboard mechanism.

Center to center of forward and aft motors; The cruise stagger is 84.64" The hover stagger is 184.39". The change is 99.75".

The mechanism consists of

At the end of the aft arm is the aft motor and Proprotor.

The rear motor and PropRotors are rotated 90º about the end of the arm. This is done by ...... a separate smaller rod that joins the motors and the minor arms. This smaller rod maybe located inside the forward arm. The ratio on movement between the motor and the main arm is ≈ 1.7:1 and the angle of the outer minor arms will play no roll in these angles.

The whole assemblage (port and starboard mechanisms) are driven by one servo in the fuselage or wing root.

The wrist rods do not have much control over the rotation of the motors near the cruse position. However, the motors can be 'captured' as they enter the cruise position.

Consider having the change of the Proprotor's pitch linked to the transitioning change; mechanically and/or electrically.

The clear area between the inner and the outer portion of the wing must be increased, for strength reasons.
