There are 8 (or 16) independent worm and wheels. ALSO it is going to require more control than just at the elbows.

The wrist joints are not on the centerline of the motors.

Can the two arms, which are located above and below each other, be replaced by a single deeper arm?

Drawing:

The views below have the aft transition arms moving down, instead of up through a portion of the wing.

However there is more aerodynamic interference with the wing.

Aerodynamics:

The transition arms and related equipment are located between the motors during cruise and hover. Therefore, particularly during cruise the mechanisms should be fairly aerodynamic.

Mechanism:

Extending and closing arms.

Wrist joint at motor rotates 90º. It is not powered nor controlled.
Elbow joint in middle rotates 180º. It is powered by a worm & wheel.
Shoulder joint at wing rotates 180º. It is not powered nor controlled.

Mechanism comes up against stops (locks) at ends of travel; to assist with rigidity during maneuvers.

There is a worm & wheels at all elbow joints. The worms might be driven by stepper motors. The movement of these motors will be synchronized by computer control.

An X-shaft might connect the forward upper port and starboard shoulder joints. An X-shaft might connect the aft upper and/or lower port and starboard shoulder joints.
