OTHER: Helicopter - Inside - Interleaving - UniCopter-UAV - 1/2-scale

Objective:

To perhaps develop and test an advanced Interleaving (or Intermeshing) UAV rotorcraft.

A rotorcraft that has good loitering time, high-speed forward flight and good maneuverability.

Currently considering all electric with three motors, and perhaps a turbine genset for initial development. See drawing 1474_Interleaving_All_Electric.dc

Note that the following Intermeshing and Interleaving are now basically identical except for the stagger between the rotors and a slight variation in the 'V' angle. It will be possible to build a single craft that can be varied for testing.

Intermeshing:

Portability:

The blades are removable (or swing aft). The propeller folds aft when not operational. The tail assemble swings down 30º.

The collapsed size of the craft should be; 84" long x 24" wide * 20" high.

The weight of the craft should be 165 lbs.

Synchronization of Rotors on Electric Motor Driven Craft:

In addition to the encoders on both rotors, the following might be considered.

Have the passage of a blade tip past the other rotor's hub indicate the Δψ between the two rotors. This would be duplicated on the other rotor for safety..

Physical Means to Eliminate Blade-Blade Clashing:

Have small 'arms' and the leading and trailing edges of the blade tips. The leading edge arm will be curved up and the trailing arm will be curved down. This will cause the blade tip to pass over, or be passed under the other rotors blade

These "arms' may be modified to counter some of the swirl from the tip vortex.

Remote Piloting:

Considering locating a camera in each of the two rotorhub pods. This way the vision will not be through a tractor propeller at the front of the fuselage.

In addition, there might be the opportunity for 3D vision at some time in the future. The remote pilot would have a screen for each eye. The cameras would have computer controlled focal point; by lens adjustment for depth and by pan and tilt (to this focal point).

Safety / Reliability:

With separate electric motors for the propeller [Predator 30] and pair of rotors [Predator 37] the craft can take off fly and land with either motor inoperative.

Notes and Thoughts:

Considering the difficulty of controlling small autonomous helicopters, will not the fact that the full size Kaman synchropter was easier to fly then helicopters with tail rotors suggest that the intermeshing helicopter will be a better platform?
