OTHER: Miscellaneous - Thoughtless Ideas - Flying Carpet (Rootes blowers)

Overview:

A large horizontal plane (carpet) (parasail) comprising many long flexible lightweight Rootes blowers.

Drawing air from above the plane of 'carpet' and discharging it below this plane generates lift.

Forward flight is achieved by tipping the 'carpet' toward in the desired direction of travel.

There is no need for a airfoil and therefor no need to 'drive' an airfoil through the air.

Description of Operation:

Collective control is by varying the velocity of all Rootes blowers.

The plane (bed, sheet, carpet) could be divided into 3 or 4 section. This way the velocity of the Rootes blowers in each segment could be varied to provide cyclic control.

Construction:

The rotors consist of 1 or 2 plies of braided carbon tubing and perhaps a unidirectional ply.

The cylindrical uncured tube is inserted into rotor molds, pressurized against the wall of the female mold and cured.

The rotor would be extremely light.

It could be strengthened with a lightweight foam core, if need be.

Electric:

In the above drawing; consider the rotating members (rotors) as having permanent magnets at their lobes, and the stationary 'I' members (stators) as having coils.

Solar cells might be mounted on the top of the stators.

Concerns:

You bet.

Optional VTOL Application for Long Rootes Blowers:

Consider installing a few of these elongated Rootes blowers in the wings of a Very STOL airplane to create a VTOL.

These blowers would have a length slightly less than the span of the wings.

These blowers and their framing would also serve as the spar, or be located fore and aft of the spar.

They would assist the redirected thrust from the propeller(s).

There could be separate smaller Rootes blowers at the wing tips and in the horizontal stabilizers.

Concerns:

Can this deliver enough air, in addition to the propeller(s), to provide VTOL

How is top to be enclosed during forward flight?

Perhaps it need not be enclosed. Perhaps the Rootes blowers run during forward flight; at a reduced speed.

The airfoil of the wing would be specially modified so that it would work in conjunction with the Rootes blowers during forward flight.
These blowers may assist by causing the transition between laminar and turbulent airflow to take place further aft on the airfoil's upper surface.

A Variant Idea:

Another dumb idea might be to somehow have hundreds or thousands of little 'compressed air vacuum cleaner' type devices located between the upper and lower surfaces of the wings and in the HS. The compressed air comes from a tank. However, the venturi effect of these devices slows the velocity down by taking air from above the wing and placing it under the wing.

IE. Increasing the volume of the airflow and decreasing the velocity of the airflow. Optimally, making the area of the streamtube close to that of the planform of the wing and there by have a relatively low velocity passing through the wing.

This device might run at low power during flight to help with the conventional airflow passing over and under the wing.

Just thinking outside the box, or perhaps, inside the mental institute.
