Shim:
If a flat sheet of shim material was reshaped, by stretching, into a half sphere then the thickness of the material at the center of the half-sphere will be 1/(π/2) = 0.64 the original thickness.
A Thought:
Could the intial shimes for the half-spherical thrust bearing initially be spun, where the metal is worked in toward the center, where it would normally be thinner?
