Special Tool - Hot Pressurized Oil Device![]()
Overview:
Device to deliver hot and pressurized oil to molds.

Notes:
Consider using hot oil under pressure when curing, in lieu of autoclave.
The CalVert proposal also uses hot oil flowing through passages in the aluminum mold. It appears that the oil is not used for pressure also.
Maximum pressure is 200 psi, I think.
Maximum temperature is 550 F., I think.
Spoke to Jon Finlay at Mannesmann. He said that 200 psi is no problem for any type of pump.
He said that 190 degrees is about maximum temperature.Fred Struchen suggested glycerin over oil for pressure/heat
GLYCERIN
Other Names: Glycerol, glycyl alcohol
Formula: C3H5(OH)3
Sp. Gr.: 1.3
Viscosity: Varies from 44 to 1,000 cPs. depending on temperature and concentration
Remarks: Clear, colorless, odorless, syrupy liquid; hygroscopic. m.p. 18°C / 64°F, b.p. 290°C / 554°F; soluble in water and alcohol; insoluble in ether; flash point 177°C / 350°F. Used in alkyd resins, cellophane, explosives, ester gums, pharmaceuticals, perfumery, cosmetics, foodstuffs, as a solvent, in printer's ink rolls, as an emulsifying agent, in anti-freeze, for paper coatings and finishes, for special soaps, lubricants and softeners and as a hydraulic fluid.
GLYCEROL - See Glycerin
Pump Notes:
Cast iron construction is satisfactory. Buna n elastomers are recommended, as is a mechanical shaft seal.
Fred’s company ‘North Shore Refrigeration’ may be the ideal one to build pressure/heat system?

I am looking to see if there is any information available on the curing of small light composite parts using a heated liquid under pressure. This is as an alternative to having the pressure and oven as separate entities.

Rubber mold inserts have been used to generate compaction pressure for curing of composites by thermal expansion of the rubber insert. A rubber insert, liquid filled, seems similarly logical.
