News from Hirth Engines:

22.11.00 ~ The bench tests with the helicopter engine H30 have been finished. Messrs. Helicraft now are going to test the engine in flight.

20.02.00 ~ New engine type (F30 E) with fuel injection system and powerful torque 61 kW (83 hp) with only 5500/min. (for more technical data see products > engines > 4-cyl. Engines)

Conversation with Matt re: 'H' version, July 6, 2001

The engine is intended for helicopter use with the crankshaft vertical. It has a separate oil injection into the top two bearings and the amount of oil is constant. It does not decrease, as does the oil that is injected with the fuel, as the engine RPM decreases.

It is intended for operation in the 6,000 to 6,400 rpm range.

The timing has been modified to suit a helicopter application.

NOW Available - New H-30 engine. Special helicopter version F30. ~ From RPE web page June 25, 2001 http://www.hirth-engines.de/english/

Latest: November 10, 2003: H30 ES, 102 hp @ 6500 rpm, 116 Nm at 5500 rpm, Working rpm range 5800-6600 rpm

Texas Armadillo;

He has a Hirth F30 on his Air Command 2 place tandem machine that he uses to train. He said the head bolts have been loosening up and blowing the head gaskets after only a couple of hours. He commented that Air Command was also going to swap out thier tandems F30 for a suburu. Evidently they aren't happy with theirs either.

GyroRon;

I still haven't met not ONE happy F-30 hirth user. What a junk pile of a engine!

Udi;

The F-30 that is mounted on the Air Command tandem is really a pile of crap.

The Ultrasport still has only the F-30 engine available which is a 2 stroke engine which does very poorly in the helicopter powering role. A number of Ultrasports have crashed due to the improper choice of powerplant by the designers. The Ultrasport company is now owned by a Taiwanese company that bought it for an investment and they know very little about rotorcraft- I will leave it at that.

Engine development / Tuning:

Matt said that Ultrasport on the 254 had to use different needles for the 2 cylinders because of the different manifold lengths.
